request an appointmentWhat are preventive services?
Preventive care refers to a variety of screenings, tests, and routine check-ups that help Dr. Gelderman-Moffett identify early signs of disease, detect abnormal changes to your health, and intercept new or worsening medical problems.
At her office, Dr. Gelderman-Moffett offers a number of preventive services for women of all ages, including those reaching perimenopause and menopause.
What preventive services are available for women?
Dr. Gelderman-Moffett provides several different preventive health screenings and tests for women, including:
Well-woman visit
A well-woman visit is a complete health screening that includes a head-to-toe physical exam, a breast exam, and a pelvic exam. These annual visits also include a Pap smear, a test that screens for signs of cervical cancer.
Bone density screening
Women are at a far higher risk of developing osteoporosis — a chronic condition that causes porous, brittle bone — than men. A bone density screening is an imaging test that measures your bone mineral density to detect osteoporosis.
Urinary incontinence screening
The Women’s Preventive Services Initiative (WPSI) recommends screening for urinary incontinence in women each year. Early screenings can help prevent urinary incontinence from becoming a more serious issue.
Diabetes screening
Dr. Gelderman-Moffett recommends screening for Type 2 diabetes in women who had gestational diabetes during pregnancy.
Mammogram screening
A mammogram is a type of X-ray that scans your breast tissue for abnormal growths and lesions. Women ages 40-44 need annual mammograms, while those who are 55 or older should seek testing once every two years. Dr. Gelderman-Moffett may perform a breast exam in addition to ordering a mammogram.
Why are preventive services important?
Preventive care is the safest, most effective way to ward off disease and maintain your health as you age. Preventive services also save you time and money over the long term because they’re less invasive.
For example, if you had gestational diabetes during pregnancy, monitoring your blood sugar levels as you age is far less costly than treating Type 2 diabetes in the future.
Dr. Gelderman-Moffett is a preventive care advocate who strives to keep you healthy now and as you age.
